John 3:16-18 God’s Love and the Invitation to Eternal Life

John 3:16-18

16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.”

On a quiet night, Nicodemus approached Jesus with questions and reverence, seeking the truth. At that moment, he may not have fully understood, but Jesus’ words illuminated his path and ours. God loves the world so much that He sent His only Son, Jesus, to this earth, offering us a hopeful opportunity—believe in Him and receive eternal life.

What immeasurable love this is! God doesn’t ask us to pay a high price; He simply desires our faith. Trusting in Jesus isn’t just about believing in a historical figure’s existence; it’s about believing in the Savior who brings eternal life, relying on Him, and entering into an intimate relationship with God. Jesus’ coming opened the door to eternal life—not just a future in heaven, but a life starting today, walking with God and experiencing His abundance and grace.

However, the warning of perishing is also clear. It doesn’t merely refer to the loss of life but to eternal separation from God, enduring pain and loss. The “perishing” Jesus speaks of isn’t just an end; it’s a complete severance of the relationship with God, forever missing out on the blessings and life He has prepared for us. Those who reject Jesus, though alive in this world, miss the opportunity to walk with God and the hope of eternal life.

Jesus’ purpose is clear: He came not to condemn us but to save us. He came to tell us that eternal life isn’t far off; it’s a gift from God, obtained through Jesus’ love and sacrifice. His coming didn’t bring judgment but brought forgiveness and reconciliation, freeing us from the bondage of sin and restoring our relationship with God.

May each of us feel God’s deep love and grace, trusting and relying on Him in our daily lives, experiencing the abundance and peace of walking with Him. God has given us infinite love and opportunities; all we need to do is respond to Him and accept the eternal life He offers.
