John 1:43-51
43 The next day, Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Follow me.”
44 Philip was from Bethsaida, the same town as Andrew and Peter.
45 Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law and whom the prophets also wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”
46 “Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?” Nathanael asked. “Come and see,” said Philip.
47 When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, “Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit.”
48 “How do you know me?” Nathanael asked.
Jesus answered, “I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.”
49 Then Nathanael declared, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the king of Israel!”
50 Jesus replied, “You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.”
51 He then added, “Very truly I tell you, you will see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”
In this touching story, Jesus’ call is both direct and warm. When He meets Philip, He gently says, “Follow me.” This simple invitation feels like a breath of fresh air, guiding Philip toward a new direction. Excited, Philip immediately decides to follow Jesus and eagerly goes to tell Nathanael about the Messiah he has encountered. This enthusiasm and faith are inspiring, filling the air with expectation.
At first, Nathanael is skeptical about Jesus’ identity and even jokes, “Can anything good come from Nazareth?” Yet, Philip responds gently, “Come and see!” This invitation reflects an open heart, suggesting that experiencing it for oneself is what truly matters.
When Jesus praises Nathanael as “a true Israelite in whom there is no deceit,” it is a warm feeling of understanding and acceptance. Each of us has had doubts at some point, but Jesus sees our true selves and offers us affirmation.
The words of Jesus deeply touch Nathanael, making him realize Jesus’ greatness immediately. This moment also encourages us to reflect: when we feel lonely or helpless in life, can we recognize that the Lord’s gaze is always upon us? May we all feel His presence in our daily lives, longing to establish a closer relationship with Him and experiencing the love and light He brings.
