John 1:35-42 What do you truly want?

John 1:35-42

35 The next day, John was again with two of his disciples.

36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he exclaimed, “Look! The Lamb of God!”

37 The two disciples heard him say this and immediately followed Jesus.

38 Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, “What do you want?”

They replied, “Rabbi, where are you staying?” (Rabbi means Teacher.)

39 “Come,” he replied, “and you will see.” So they went and saw where he was staying, and they spent that day with him. It was about four in the afternoon.

40 Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus.

41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah!” (That is, the Christ.)

42 And he brought Simon to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon, son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which, when translated, is Peter).

As we ponder the reasons for following the Lord, we can’t help but ask ourselves: Are we truly seeking Him, or are there other desires at play? Are we after reputation, status, wealth, or perhaps the pursuit of physical health? Maybe we long for healing from past wounds in our hearts? Often, our motivations for following the Lord can be quite complex, and only we truly know what’s in our hearts.

Yet, the desires of these two disciples shine with purity. They simply wanted to dwell with Jesus and truly know Him, without asking for anything else. Today, Jesus is asking each of us who wishes to follow Him, “What do you want?”

The most beautiful pursuit is to establish a genuine relationship with Jesus. In our journey with Him, we will experience His love, grace, and a peace that surpasses all understanding. May each of us yearn to be with Him, desiring to know Him more deeply every day and to feel the light of life that He brings.
